Despite tensions in India-Pakistan relations, Modi government prioritized Sikh sentiments: Prof. Sarchand Singh khalka

Amritsar –Punjab BJP spokesperson and Sikh thinker Prof. Sarchand Singh Khiala warmly welcomed the decision of the Government of India to allow a group of Indian Sikh devotees to visit Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sri Nankana Sahib, Pakistan, on the occasion of the Prakash Purab of the First Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
He expressed gratitude to the Guru and extended special thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, noting that despite the tense circumstances in India-Pakistan relations, Sikh religious sentiments were respected. Prof. Khiala stated that this decision demonstrates the Indian government’s successful handling of the matter with religious sensitivity, stability, and diplomatic acumen.
Prof. Khiala said that the Indian government, by taking into account the spiritual needs and sentiments of the Sikh community on the occasion of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji’s Prakash Purab, demonstrated its sensitivity and resolve. This decision not only holds religious significance but also strengthens the sense of social and national unity.
He further added that such pilgrimages play a crucial role in promoting Guru Nanak Sahib Ji’s teachings of “Sarbat da Bhala” (well-being of all) at a global level. Therefore, the Kartarpur corridor must be reopened, so that Sikh devotees can have the opportunity to visit the sacred Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur, the Jyoti Jyot Asthan of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji.
Prof. Khiala appealed to the Indian government to engage in diplomatic dialogue with the Pakistani government to ensure that Indian Sikh devotees are able to undertake the pilgrimage with full safety, respect, and facilities.
On this occasion, he also urged the government to implement without delay the 2019 Home Ministry notification for the immediate release of Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera and Prof. Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar, and the commutation of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana’s sentence.
He stated that this decision is not only a matter of religious inspiration but also a symbol of the Indian government’s deep respect, recognition, and commitment towards Sikhism and Sikh sentiments. It sends a clear message that India is always vigilant regarding the religious freedom, safety, and justice of its citizens.
