Chandigarh-A political controversy has erupted after remarks attributed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding women during an event around International Women’s Day drew criticism from several quarters.
Critics have demanded that the Chief Minister publicly apologize for what they described as humiliating and derogatory comments about women. The criticism stems from an anecdote in which Mann reportedly referred to women using the term “Bhabhi” while narrating a story from his college days. According to the account, he said that a girl he liked in college eventually came to apply a “tikka” on his forehead after he had become famous and owned a good car.
Opponents argue that such remarks portray women in a poor light and reduce them to objects of humour and social status. They say such comments are inappropriate, particularly when made by a public leader on an occasion meant to honor women and their contributions to society.
Critics have challenged supporters of the Chief Minister to first question him over these alleged remarks before raising allegations against others on issues related to women’s dignity and respect.
