The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) strongly condemns the alleged misbehaviour and disrespectful treatment by Majitha police officials towards MLA Gurneet Kaur during a recent incident in Punjab. Such conduct by law enforcement authorities towards an elected public representative raises serious concerns about the functioning, accountability, and professionalism of the police administration.
NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal stated that democracy functions effectively only when public institutions respect constitutional values and maintain dignity in their dealings with elected representatives as well as ordinary citizens. Any form of intimidation, harassment, or disrespectful behaviour by police officials is unacceptable and weakens public trust in the system.
Chahal said that if an MLA representing the people can allegedly face such treatment, then ordinary citizens may feel even more vulnerable while dealing with authorities. He emphasized that Punjab Police must act within the framework of law, transparency, and accountability, while maintaining proper conduct in all public interactions.
NAPA has demanded a fair and impartial inquiry into the incident involving MLA Gurneet Kaur and urged senior Punjab government officials to take appropriate action against those found responsible for any misconduct. The association further appealed to the Punjab government to ensure that democratic institutions and elected representatives are treated with respect, irrespective of political differences.
The association reiterated that maintaining law and order does not give any official the authority to misuse power or behave in a manner that undermines democratic traditions. NAPA stands firmly in support of justice, accountability, and respectful conduct within all government institutions.
