The German Embassy in New Delhi announced a significant policy change on Tuesday, completely scrapping the airport transit visa requirement for Indian citizens. Published officially in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette, the rule change will formally go into effect starting June 3, 2026.
The decision follows through on commitments made during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s state visit to India in January 2026. According to diplomatic officials, the relaxation underscores a mutual effort to facilitate seamless international travel, deepen bilateral cooperation, and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
Under the new guidelines, Indian passport holders flying to third destinations like the US, UK, or Canada will no longer need to apply for a Schengen Type A transit visa just to connect through German hubs. The decision is set to drastically reduce travel paperwork and lower out-of-pocket costs for thousands of passengers transiting through major airports like Frankfurt and Munich.
