The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has expressed deep concern over reports emerging from Shibpur, West Bengal, where a Sikh youth has allegedly accused his mother and another individual of pressuring him to convert to Islam and subjecting him to assault after he refused.
NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal stated that the allegations, if proven true, raise serious concerns regarding religious freedom, personal liberty, and the constitutional rights guaranteed to every citizen of India.
“Every individual has the fundamental right to practice and preserve his or her faith without coercion, intimidation, or fear. Any allegation involving forced religious conversion, threats, or violence must be investigated thoroughly and impartially,” said Chahal.
NAPA emphasizes that these allegations are currently under investigation and that all parties are entitled to due process under the law. The Association urges law enforcement agencies to conduct a fair, transparent, and time-bound inquiry based solely on evidence and legal principles.
The organization further appeals to community leaders and the public to maintain communal harmony and refrain from speculation or inflammatory rhetoric while the investigation is ongoing.
NAPA believes that protecting religious freedom and human dignity is essential to preserving India’s pluralistic and democratic values. Any violation of these principles, regardless of the religion or identity of those involved, must be addressed in accordance with the law.
The Association calls upon the concerned authorities in West Bengal to ensure that justice is served and that the rights and safety of all individuals are protected.
