Naming of Punjab Police Officers in US Extortion Cases is Damages Punjab’s Global Image-Pargat Singh

Chandigarh: Senior Congress leader and MLA Pargat Singh has expressed serious concern over reports that Punjab Police officers are allegedly being named in extortion-related cases emerging from the United States, warning that such allegations could severely damage Punjab’s international reputation.

Reacting to the reports, Pargat Singh said that the issue was not merely a law-and-order matter but a serious challenge to the credibility of Punjab’s institutions. He stated that when officials entrusted with maintaining law and order themselves face allegations of involvement in criminal activities, it raises fundamental questions about accountability, transparency, and the functioning of the police system.

“This is a serious blow to Punjab’s international reputation,” Pargat Singh said in a statement. “It is deeply alarming that Punjab Police officers are reportedly being named in extortion cases emerging in the United States. If those entrusted with enforcing the law are themselves facing such allegations, it raises serious questions about law enforcement, accountability, and Punjab’s global image.”

The MLA said Punjab has a large international diaspora, particularly in countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, and incidents involving alleged criminal links can create fear and mistrust among overseas Punjabis. He added that the state government must ensure that any allegations are investigated fairly and transparently.

The comments come amid growing concerns among Punjabi communities abroad over organized crime, extortion threats, and alleged criminal networks operating across international borders. Law enforcement agencies in different countries have previously investigated cases involving threats, extortion attempts, and gang-related activities linked to individuals of Punjabi origin.

Pargat Singh emphasized that Punjab cannot afford to allow its image as a hardworking, enterprising, and globally respected community to be affected by allegations involving a few individuals or officials. He called for strict action against anyone found guilty, regardless of their position.“Public trust in institutions is the foundation of democracy. Any allegation against those responsible for protecting citizens must be examined seriously and independently,” he said. The issue has also renewed debate over the need for stronger coordination between Indian and international law enforcement agencies to address cross-border organized crime and protect the reputation and safety of Punjabi communities worldwide. The Punjab government and police authorities have yet to issue a detailed response to Pargat Singh’s remarks. Any investigation or legal proceedings would determine the facts behind the allegations
