SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) set a new all-time special event ridership record during the six FIFA World Cup matches at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, carrying 230,000 passengers to and from the venue, more than for any previous event in the agency’s history.
The milestone underscores the vital role public transit played in connecting hundreds of thousands of soccer fans with one of the world’s largest sporting events while keeping the region moving. Working closely with regional transportation partners BART and Caltrain, this was a historic endeavor.
The tournament’s busiest day came on June 25 for the Paraguay vs. Australia match, when nearly 42,000 fans traveled to and from the stadium on VTA, setting a new single-event ridership record for the agency. Beyond match attendees, thousands of customers continued to rely on VTA’s bus and light rail network each day to get to work, school, medical appointments, and other destinations.
“This record-breaking achievement reflects the extraordinary commitment of VTA employees and the confidence our riders place in public transit,” said Carolyn Gonot, VTA General Manager/CEO. “Hosting six FIFA World Cup matches required months of planning, close coordination with our regional partners, and flawless execution across our agency. We not only moved 230,000 stadium passengers safely and efficiently, but we also continued providing reliable service for our everyday riders. This success demonstrates that VTA is ready to deliver for the world’s biggest events.”
To meet unprecedented demand, VTA operated enhanced light rail service supported by a network of buses, positioned transit ambassadors throughout the system to assist customers, and coordinated closely with local jurisdictions, public safety agencies, regional transportation partners, and event organizers to deliver seamless service before and after every match.
The record-setting performance further establishes VTA as a critical transportation partner for major international events and showcases the region’s ability to move large crowds safely, efficiently, and sustainably. As the Bay Area prepares to host more major events in the coming years, VTA’s successful World Cup operations provide a proven blueprint for moving fans while maintaining reliable daily transit service.VTA thanks its employees, customers, regional partners, and event organizers for helping make the six-match series a historic success.
