Sangrur— Former Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Gurinder Singh Dhillon has described the Congress party’s Insaaf Rally in Sangrur as a successful political gathering, highlighting its significance in Punjab’s changing political landscape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Dhillon’s remarks come after the Congress organised a major rally in Sangrur, bringing together its national and state leadership, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and several prominent Punjab leaders. The gathering was aimed at projecting unity within the party and strengthening its campaign against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
The rally, held in Sangrur, the home district of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, was viewed as an important political event for the Congress. The party used the platform to raise concerns about Punjab’s drug problem, law and order, unemployment, corruption and the economic challenges facing the state.
Dhillon’s assessment of the rally as successful adds to the political significance of the event, particularly as Congress attempts to regain public confidence and establish itself as a strong contender in the next Assembly elections.
The rally also provided Congress leaders an opportunity to highlight issues affecting ordinary Punjabis, particularly young people and families concerned about drug abuse, gangster-related violence and employment opportunities.
Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders criticised the AAP government over its handling of these issues, while calling for accountability and a change in governance. These were political allegations made by the Congress leadership, which the ruling party may respond to.
The presence of senior leaders from different factions of the Punjab Congress was also significant. After months of internal differences, the rally offered the party an opportunity to demonstrate a united front and present a collective political message.
Sangrur has considerable political importance in Punjab, given its association with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the AAP’s electoral rise. Holding a major Congress rally in this region was therefore seen as a strategic move to challenge the ruling party on its home ground. The successful mobilisation of party workers and supporters, along with the participation of national leaders, is likely to provide Congress with renewed momentum as it prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections.
Dhillon’s positive assessment reflects the broader political attention surrounding the rally. However, the ultimate test of its success will be whether the gathering translates into sustained public engagement, stronger organisational unity and electoral support in the months ahead. The Sangrur Insaaf Rally has thus emerged as an important moment in Punjab’s political campaign, with Congress seeking to turn its public mobilisation into a credible challenge to the AAP government.
