Sangrur — Senior Congress leader and MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira has welcomed the successful organisation of the party’s Insaaf Rally in Sangrur, describing the gathering as an important political moment for Punjab and a strong message to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

The rally, held at Phaguwala village in Sangrur district, brought together senior Congress leaders, party workers and supporters from different parts of Punjab. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi addressed the gathering, marking a major step in the party’s preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Khaira, known for his outspoken criticism of the AAP government, has consistently raised issues concerning Punjab’s governance, drug menace, law and order, farmers’ interests and the state’s economic challenges.

The Sangrur rally provided Congress leaders with a platform to highlight these concerns and question the performance of the Bhagwant Mann-led government. The Congress leadership focused on several pressing issues confronting Punjab, including drug abuse, gangster-related violence, unemployment, alleged corruption and the difficulties faced by farmers.

Rahul Gandhi accused the AAP government of failing to fulfil its promises and alleged that Punjab’s administration was being controlled from Delhi. He called for a government that prioritises the interests and aspirations of the people of Punjab.

Khaira and other Congress leaders have repeatedly argued that the state requires stronger accountability, effective governance and a comprehensive strategy to address the problems affecting its youth. The rally also highlighted the Congress party’s demand for justice for families affected by drug-related violence and other serious incidents.

The choice of Sangrur for the Insaaf Rally carried considerable political importance, as the district is associated with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and represents a significant political centre in the Malwa region.

By organising a major gathering in the Chief Minister’s home district, Congress sought to challenge the AAP government on its own political ground and demonstrate its ability to mobilise public support. The participation of senior Congress leaders from different factions also provided an opportunity to project unity within the state party organisation.

The Insaaf Rally is being viewed as an early step in Congress’s campaign to regain power in Punjab. The party is attempting to convert public dissatisfaction over governance-related issues into a broader political movement.

Khaira’s positive assessment of the rally reflects the party’s confidence that the gathering has strengthened its organisational momentum and brought Punjab’s major concerns into the centre of political debate.

However, the real challenge for Congress will be to sustain the momentum generated by the rally, strengthen its grassroots organisation and convince voters that it can provide an alternative government capable of addressing Punjab’s longstanding problems.

The Sangrur gathering has therefore emerged as a significant political event, with Congress leaders seeking to turn the message of justice and accountability into a sustained campaign ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
