Satnam Singh Chahal, Executive Director of the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), extends his warmest greetings and heartfelt wishes to the Sikh community, the Punjabi diaspora and people of all faiths around the world on the auspicious occasions of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.
In his festive message, Chahal said that Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas are occasions that carry a profound message of hope, freedom, justice, humanity and the triumph of light over darkness. These celebrations remind us that no matter how difficult circumstances may become, the values of truth, courage, compassion and righteousness must never be abandoned.
Reflecting on the historical and spiritual significance of Bandi Chhor Divas, Chahal said that the occasion commemorates the historic release of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji from Gwalior Fort, along with 52 Hindu kings who had been imprisoned there. Guru Sahib’s insistence that the other prisoners should also be released reflects an extraordinary example of compassion, selflessness and concern for the freedom and dignity of others.
He said that this historic event is not merely a chapter of Sikh history but a universal lesson for humanity. It teaches us that true leadership is not about securing freedom and privileges for oneself alone, but also about standing up for the rights, dignity and freedom of others.
Chahal observed that the message of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji has particular relevance in today’s world, where communities in different parts of the world continue to face discrimination, religious intolerance, injustice, violence and restrictions on fundamental freedoms. The spirit of Bandi Chhor Divas reminds everyone that freedom of religion, equality and respect for human dignity must be protected for all people, regardless of their faith, background or nationality.
He further said that Diwali represents the victory of light over darkness and encourages people to replace hatred with love, ignorance with knowledge, division with unity and despair with hope. The lighting of lamps should also inspire individuals to bring positivity into their families, communities and society.
Extending his greetings to Punjabis living across North America and throughout the global diaspora, Chahal encouraged people to celebrate these occasions with happiness, responsibility and consideration for others. He also appealed to the community to remember those who are suffering from poverty, conflict, displacement, discrimination and other hardships, and to extend a helping hand to people in need.
He emphasised that festivals become more meaningful when their celebrations are accompanied by acts of kindness, generosity, community service and respect for fellow human beings.
“The real light of these celebrations should shine through our actions. Let us build a society where every individual can live with dignity, practise their faith freely, enjoy equal opportunities and feel safe and respected. The greatest tribute to our historical and spiritual values is to practise them in our daily lives,” Chahal said.
On behalf of NAPA, Chahal wished everyone a joyful, peaceful and prosperous Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas. He expressed hope that these auspicious occasions would bring happiness to families, strengthen community relationships and inspire a renewed commitment to peace, justice, freedom and universal brotherhood.
“May the divine light of these celebrations remove darkness from our lives and bring peace, happiness, good health and prosperity to every home. Let us continue to stand together for humanity, equality and freedom.”
