We strongly condemn the alleged defamatory reporting against Uttar Pradesh folk singer Neha Singh Rathore. If a news channel has falsely portrayed a woman as a prostitute, as she alleges, the matter goes far beyond irresponsible journalism. Such reporting can damage a person’s dignity, reputation, livelihood and personal safety. The consequences of publishing allegedly fabricated claims cannot necessarily be undone by issuing an apology after the harm has already been done.
Journalism carries a serious responsibility to verify facts, protect individual dignity and serve the public interest. Media organisations must not use their reach to spread unverified allegations or subject individuals to public humiliation. If the allegations against ABP News are established, an apology alone may not be sufficient to address the harm caused. Neha Singh Rathore deserves a fair investigation, an effective remedy and accountability through the appropriate legal process.
We stand for the principle that no woman should have to pay the price for alleged media misconduct with her dignity and reputation. A free press is essential to democracy, but freedom of the press must go hand in hand with accuracy, responsibility and accountability. If defamatory reporting is allowed to continue without meaningful consequences, the damage can extend far beyond one individual.
Neha Singh Rathore’s demand for justice deserves serious consideration. The relevant evidence should be examined impartially, and responsibility should be determined through a fair process. An apology may acknowledge a mistake, but justice must also address the harm caused and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
