London-British MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has expressed deep concern over the prolonged case of Jagtar Singh Johal, who has been released on bail in India after spending nearly nine years in custody. Dhesi said that many of his constituents in Slough, along with himself, have followed Johal’s case with considerable concern and that his family is now eager to see him return home.
In a public statement, Dhesi emphasised that the case had continued for far too long and called for a swift resolution. While the grant of bail represents a significant development, the family’s central concern remains Johal’s return home after years of legal uncertainty and separation.
Jagtar Singh Johal, a British national from Scotland, was arrested in Punjab in November 2017. His case has attracted sustained attention from his family, human rights advocates and British political representatives, who have raised concerns about his prolonged detention and the legal proceedings against him.
Dhesi’s remarks underline the continuing concern among sections of the British Punjabi community over Johal’s situation. His release on bail does not, by itself, mean that the criminal proceedings have concluded or that all restrictions on his movement have been lifted.
The case continues to raise questions about the length of legal proceedings, the rights of detained individuals and the need for a timely judicial resolution. For Johal’s family, the immediate hope remains that the outstanding legal issues will be resolved promptly and that he will be able to reunite with his loved ones in the United Kingdom.
