MLA Pargat Singh Calls for Mass Participation in Panjab University Senate Elections

Chandigarh-Senior Congress leader and MLA Pargat Singh has issued a strong public appeal urging students, graduates, and the wider Punjabi community to actively participate in the upcoming Senate elections of Panjab University, Chandigarh, scheduled for September. Emphasising the significance of these elections, Singh described them as a crucial moment in safeguarding Punjab’s academic autonomy and cultural identity.

In a statement shared on social media, Pargat Singh highlighted the historical role played by students and citizens in resisting what he termed as repeated attempts by the Central Government of India to dilute Punjab’s presence in the prestigious institution. He pointed out that recent collective efforts had successfully ensured the Senate’s continued existence, which he described as a key democratic body within the university’s governance structure.

Singh stressed that the upcoming elections are not merely an administrative exercise but a defining battle to preserve Punjab’s linguistic, cultural, and academic heritage within Panjab University. He warned that any weakening of representation could have long-term implications for the identity of the institution, which has historically been closely tied to Punjab’s ethos.

Making a special appeal to the Graduate Constituency, Singh urged all eligible voters—graduates who completed their degrees at least five years ago, as well as postgraduates—to ensure they are registered. He called upon them to act promptly and participate in the democratic process, underscoring that their vote would play a decisive role in shaping the future direction of the university.

“Safeguarding Punjab’s identity, language, and culture in Panjab University is our shared responsibility,” Singh stated, calling for unity and proactive engagement from all stakeholders. His appeal comes at a time when debates over institutional autonomy and regional representation in higher education are gaining renewed momentum across the country.
