The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) expresses its strongest and unequivocal condemnation of the worsening law-and-order situation in Punjab, where repeated incidents of intimidation, political misuse of power, and institutional failure are creating an environment of fear and insecurity for citizens and the global Punjabi diaspora.
One of the most disturbing recent incidents involves allegations against a sitting AAP minister, Hardeep Singh Mundia, who reportedly threatened an industrialist over a pending payment for nearly a year after acquiring agricultural trolley equipment. When the businessman demanded his rightful dues, instead of receiving justice, he and his family were allegedly subjected to intimidation and pressure. Such conduct, if true, represents a blatant abuse of political authority and sends a dangerous message that those in power are above accountability.
In another deeply troubling pattern, multiple reports have surfaced from across Punjab where businessmen and small traders are allegedly being coerced into making “donations” under pressure from politically connected individuals. These forced collections—often carried out in the name of influence or authority—have sparked anger among the public and raised serious concerns about the return of a culture of extortion under political protection.
Equally alarming is a viral video circulating on social media platforms, where individuals have alleged harassment and threats of false police cases. Such incidents reinforce a growing perception that law enforcement mechanisms are being misused to target or silence individuals rather than protect them. This perception is further damaging the credibility of Punjab’s institutions at both the national and international level.
The impact of these developments is being strongly felt by the Punjabi diaspora. NAPA has received consistent feedback from Non-Resident Punjabis (NRIs) who are increasingly reluctant to visit Punjab due to fears of harassment, extortion, or false legal entanglements. This is a deeply painful reality, as the diaspora has historically played a crucial role in supporting Punjab’s economy, culture, and global identity.
Furthermore, ongoing incidents of disputes and misconduct within religious institutions, including reports of confrontations and the presence of anti-social elements in sacred spaces, are adding to the instability. Such actions not only hurt religious sentiments but also damage the dignity and image of the Sikh community worldwide.
NAPA firmly believes that these are not isolated incidents but part of a broader and dangerous trend where accountability is weakening and governance is being compromised. If immediate corrective action is not taken, Punjab risks long-term damage to its economy, investment climate, and global reputation.
We call upon the Punjab Government and law enforcement agencies to act decisively and transparently. Independent investigations must be conducted into all such incidents, and strict action must be taken against anyone found guilty—regardless of their political position or influence. The rule of law must be restored, and public confidence must be rebuilt without delay.
NAPA stands firmly with the people of Punjab and the global Punjabi community in demanding justice, accountability, and the protection of fundamental rights.
