Milpitas(California)The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) strongly condemns the disturbing scenes of violence, intimidation, and attacks on homes that have emerged during the recent unrest in Belfast following a knife attack incident. Reports and images showing masked individuals targeting residential areas, threatening families, and creating an atmosphere of fear are deeply alarming and unacceptable in any democratic society.
NAPA believes that every individual, regardless of their ethnicity, nationality, religion, or immigration status, has the fundamental right to live in safety and dignity. No family should be forced to fear for their lives, face intimidation, or be driven from their homes because of community tensions, rumours, or acts committed by individuals. Collective punishment and mob actions only deepen divisions and undermine the rule of law.
While any criminal act, including violent attacks, must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible held accountable through the legal process, it is equally important that innocent people and entire communities are not unfairly blamed or targeted. Justice can never be achieved through vigilantism, hate-fueled actions, or attacks against vulnerable families.
NAPA urges political leaders, community organisations, law enforcement agencies, and civil society groups to work together to restore calm, prevent further violence, and promote dialogue and understanding. Authorities must take all necessary steps to protect residents, ensure public safety, and bring those responsible for acts of violence and intimidation to justice.
The Punjabi community, like many immigrant and minority communities around the world, understands the importance of social harmony, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. We stand in solidarity with all victims affected by the unrest and call upon all parties to reject hatred, violence, and division.
At a time when communities across the world are becoming increasingly diverse, it is essential that differences are addressed through democratic dialogue and lawful means rather than fear, aggression, and mob violence. The values of tolerance, human rights, and respect for the rule of law must prevail.
