Punjab Political News Trends – Mid-July 2026

Jalandhar-Punjab politics is entering a crucial phase with the 2027 Assembly elections just months away. The state is witnessing a multi-cornered contest where anti-incumbency against the ruling AAP is growing, while opposition parties are struggling with their own internal challenges and strategic shifts. The biggest story currently is the deepening crisis within the Congress. The rift between Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has intensified. Channi’s supporters recently met AICC in-charge Bhupesh Baghel to demand leadership change and better representation in ticket distribution for 2027.

Public statements from both sides have become sharper, raising concerns about party unity at a critical time. Despite these tensions, Channi’s strong Dalit outreach strategy remains one of Congress’s biggest assets, as the party tries to consolidate support among Scheduled Caste voters. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party continues to hold an edge due to its welfare schemes and Bhagwant Mann’s personal connection with voters. However, anti-incumbency over issues like drugs, unemployment, farmer distress, and governance delivery is becoming more visible on the ground. On the other side, the BJP is aggressively preparing for a solo fight in 2027.

The party has decided to contest all 117 seats independently and is focusing on organisational expansion, anti-drug messaging, digital outreach, and outreach to Dalit and OBC communities. This marks a significant shift from its earlier alliance-dependent approach. The Shiromani Akali Dal is still trying to regain its lost ground, especially in rural areas, but has not shown major signs of revival yet. Overall, Punjab politics is heading toward a highly competitive and unpredictable election in 2027, where unity, caste equations, and governance performance will play decisive roles.
