Punjab’s political landscape has produced many leaders who have represented the state’s interests at the national level. Among the contemporary faces of Punjab politics is Gurjeet Singh Aujla, the Indian National Congress Member of Parliament from the historic city of Amritsar. Since entering Parliament in 2017, Aujla has established himself as a prominent political figure, winning three consecutive Lok Sabha elections and becoming one of the Congress party’s most recognisable leaders in Punjab.

Born on 30 October 1972 in Amritsar, Gurjeet Singh Aujla belongs to a family rooted in the city. Before entering active politics, he was associated with agriculture and business, experiences that shaped his understanding of the economic challenges faced by both urban traders and rural farmers. His familiarity with grassroots issues later became one of the foundations of his political career.

Aujla’s entry into Parliament came during the 2017 Amritsar Lok Sabha by-election, held after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned the parliamentary seat following his election as Punjab Chief Minister. Contesting on a Congress ticket, Aujla secured a decisive victory and entered the Lok Sabha for the first time. The victory immediately placed him among the emerging leaders of the Congress in Punjab.

His political journey continued successfully in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when he defeated senior BJP leader and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in one of Punjab’s highest-profile electoral contests. The victory reinforced his political standing and demonstrated his ability to retain public confidence in a constituency known for its politically aware electorate.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Aujla once again retained the Amritsar seat, making him a three-time Member of Parliament. His consecutive victories have given the Congress continuity in representing one of Punjab’s most significant parliamentary constituencies, which includes the Golden Temple city, the Attari-Wagah international border, major industrial areas, and important rural regions.

Throughout his parliamentary career, Gurjeet Singh Aujla has frequently raised issues relating to Punjab’s economy, agriculture, border security, the welfare of traders, infrastructure development, industrial revival, tourism promotion, and the concerns of farmers. He has consistently argued for increased central assistance for Punjab and has spoken on matters affecting border districts and national security.

Amritsar itself presents unique challenges. Besides being Punjab’s spiritual capital, it is a major tourism destination, an international border city, and a commercial hub. As MP, Aujla has often highlighted the need for improved infrastructure, better air connectivity, enhanced trade opportunities through the Attari border, and greater investment in heritage conservation and tourism. These issues have remained central to his parliamentary interventions and public engagements.

One of the moments that brought Aujla national attention occurred during the December 2023 Parliament security breach, when intruders released smoke canisters inside the Lok Sabha chamber. Eyewitnesses and media reports noted that Aujla, along with other MPs and security personnel, helped overpower one of the intruders. Following the incident, his statement that “A Punjabi never runs away from danger” received wide media coverage and reflected the courage he sought to project during the crisis.

As a parliamentarian, Aujla has maintained a strong attendance record and has actively participated in parliamentary debates and discussions. According to parliamentary performance data, he has maintained attendance close to the national average while participating in debates and raising questions concerning public policy and constituency-related issues.

Within the Punjab Congress, Gurjeet Singh Aujla is regarded as one of the party’s senior electoral leaders. Over the years, he has remained involved in organizational matters and has often been among the Congress voices responding to issues involving governance, law and order, border security, agriculture, and the rights of Punjab. His political influence extends beyond Amritsar because of his repeated electoral success and visibility in state politics.

Like every public representative, Aujla has also faced political criticism from rival parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party, Aam Aadmi Party, and Shiromani Akali Dal have, at various times, questioned his performance on development projects, infrastructure, and constituency-level issues. Political debate over the pace of development in Amritsar, unemployment, industrial growth, and civic infrastructure has remained part of Punjab’s competitive political environment. These criticisms reflect normal democratic scrutiny rather than any judicial finding of wrongdoing.

Supporters, however, credit Aujla with remaining accessible to constituents and consistently raising Punjab’s concerns in Parliament. They argue that his repeated electoral victories demonstrate continued public trust and appreciation for his work on constituency issues.

As Punjab moves toward future political contests, Gurjeet Singh Aujla remains an influential figure in both Amritsar and state politics. Whether discussing border trade, heritage conservation, industrial development, tourism, farmers’ concerns, or national issues affecting Punjab, he continues to occupy a significant place in the state’s political discourse.
