BIRMINGHAM, UK: Preet Kaur Gill, Member of Parliament, has joined Labour colleagues in writing to Birmingham City Council’s leader, demanding that Green Party cabinet members publicly disown their party’s “Zionism is Racism” motion.
In a statement posted on X, Gill said that if the Green cabinet members refused to distance themselves from the motion, the power-sharing agreement should come to an end. She argued that standing against racism requires leadership and concrete action, rather than words alone.
Gill’s intervention highlights tensions within Birmingham’s local political arrangements over the relationship between political expression, opposition to racism and the responsibilities of parties participating in a shared administration.
The controversy centres on the wording of the motion and the position taken by Green Party representatives. The demand from Gill and her Labour colleagues is that Green cabinet members publicly clarify their stance and disassociate themselves from the motion.
The issue also raises broader questions about how political parties should address contentious statements concerning Zionism, Israel and antisemitism while protecting legitimate political debate. Zionism generally refers to support for Jewish national self-determination, particularly in the historic homeland of the Jewish people. Opposition to Zionism is not automatically identical to antisemitism, but criticism of Israel or Zionism can become antisemitic when it relies on anti-Jewish stereotypes or targets Jewish people collectively.
Gill’s statement makes clear that she regards a public response from Green cabinet members as necessary to maintaining the political partnership. Whether the power-sharing agreement will be affected depends on the subsequent decisions of the parties involved.
The Green Party cabinet members’ response, the exact wording and status of the motion, and any formal decision concerning the power-sharing agreement should be verified before publication.
