A University of Florida Health physician has been arrested in Florida following an investigation into the alleged online transmission of child sexual abuse material, according to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. The accused, Dr. Chintan Vimalkumar Shah, 40, is a nephrologist and assistant professor affiliated with UF Health. Authorities said the investigation was initiated after the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force received a cyber tip indicating that child sexual abuse material had allegedly been shared online.
Investigators traced the reported online activity to Shah, obtained search warrants, and subsequently arrested him. According to law enforcement, he has been charged with possession of child sexual abuse material, transmission of child sexual abuse material, and using a communication device to facilitate a felony.
Following the arrest, the University of Florida confirmed that Dr. Shah has been placed on administrative leave and is prohibited from accessing university property while the case proceeds. University officials stated that they are cooperating with law enforcement authorities.
The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active and additional charges could be filed as investigators continue to examine the evidence.
The allegations against Dr. Shah have drawn significant public attention because of his position as a physician and university faculty member. However, under the U.S. legal system, an arrest and the filing of criminal charges do not constitute a conviction. Dr. Shah is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law
