Chandigarh: Rajya Sabha MP Padam Shri Vikramjit Singh Sahney has once again called for the declassification of official records related to Operation Blue Star, stating that even after 42 years, many important questions surrounding the military operation remain unanswered.
In a public statement issued on the anniversary of Operation Blue Star, Sahney emphasised that transparency and historical accountability are essential for strengthening democracy and preserving public trust. He noted that records released by the United Kingdom have already confirmed that a British Special Air Service (SAS) officer provided advice to Indian authorities in the period leading up to Operation Blue Star in June 1984.
The MP argued that if foreign governments can declassify records related to the events of 1984, India should also consider making relevant documents available to the public. According to him, enough time has passed for a comprehensive review of historical records, and future generations deserve access to factual information about one of the most significant and controversial chapters in modern Indian history.
Sahney clarified that his demand is not aimed at reviving old wounds or creating fresh divisions within society. Instead, he said the objective is to establish historical facts and ensure that researchers, scholars, policymakers, and citizens have access to authentic information. He stressed that transparency is a hallmark of mature democracies and that openness regarding historical events can contribute to reconciliation and understanding.
Operation Blue Star, conducted in June 1984 at the Harmandir Sahib complex in Amritsar, remains one of the most debated events in independent India’s history. The operation continues to evoke strong emotions among Sikhs worldwide, with many seeking greater clarity regarding the decisions, planning, and circumstances that led to the military action.
Sahney’s renewed appeal adds to longstanding demands from various sections of society, historians, and members of the Sikh community who have called for greater transparency regarding official records connected to the events of 1984. He maintained that understanding the truth through documented evidence would help future generations learn from history while promoting accountability and informed public discourse.
The MP concluded by urging the Government of India to consider the declassification of relevant records in the larger interest of historical truth, democratic transparency, and national understanding
