NAPA Condemns Alleged Double Standards in Treatment of Sikhs Regarding Traditional Swords

Milpitas (California)/Chandigarh -North American Punjabi Association(NAPA) Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal has expressed deep concern and resentment over what he describes as a glaring inconsistency in the treatment of the Sikh community concerning the possession and carrying of traditional swords. Chahal questioned why Sikh religious symbols and articles of faith, particularly swords associated with Sikh traditions, are subjected to scrutiny and confiscation in certain instances, while reports from other parts of the country indicate that similar swords are being publicly distributed without attracting comparable action from authorities.

“The Sikh community has always respected the law of the land while remaining committed to its religious identity and traditions. It is therefore deeply disturbing to witness what appears to be unequal standards being applied,” said Chahal. He emphasised that the Sikh faith recognises the Kirpan as one of the Five Ks and an important religious article symbolising the duty to uphold justice, protect the weak, and stand against oppression. He stated that any action affecting Sikh religious practices should be approached with sensitivity, fairness, and full respect for constitutional protections guaranteeing freedom of religion.

Chahal further noted that if authorities consider the distribution or carrying of swords to be a matter of public concern, then policies should be applied uniformly and without discrimination. Conversely, if such activities are permitted in other contexts, Sikhs should not be singled out or subjected to selective enforcement. “The principles of equality and justice require that all citizens and communities be treated fairly. Selective actions create a perception of bias and undermine confidence in the rule of law,” he said. He called upon the concerned state and central authorities to clarify their policies and ensure that no community faces discrimination on the basis of its religious identity. He urged governments across the country to engage constructively with Sikh representatives and community organizations whenever matters affecting Sikh religious traditions arise.

Chahal reiterated that the Sikh community has made immense contributions to India’s unity, security, and development and deserves the same respect and protection of its religious rights as every other community. He appealed for a transparent, balanced, and constitutionally consistent approach that upholds both public safety and the religious freedoms guaranteed to all citizens.
