Bathinda-The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has taken serious note of a viral social media post claiming that nearly 500 migrants are living under a bridge in Bathinda, with several reportedly in possession of Aadhaar cards. While the authenticity of the exact numbers and details remains unverified, the issue has sparked widespread concern and demands urgent clarification from the Punjab government and relevant authorities.

In a strongly worded statement, NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal said that even the possibility of such a situation points toward deeper administrative lapses and governance failures. “If a large number of people are indeed living in such inhumane conditions under a bridge, it is not just a question of documentation—it is a humanitarian crisis. The government must immediately investigate and present the truth before the public,” he stated.

Chahal emphasised that Aadhaar is a sensitive identity document, and any perception of misuse or irregular issuance raises serious concerns. “If these individuals possess Aadhaar cards, the government must clarify how these were issued, under what verification process, and whether proper protocols were followed. Transparency is essential to maintain public trust,” he added.

At the same time, NAPA cautioned against jumping to conclusions based solely on viral content. Chahal noted that migrant workers are a vital part of Punjab’s economy, particularly in sectors like construction, agriculture, and industry. “We must not allow misinformation or unverified claims to fuel social divisions or target vulnerable communities. However, this does not absolve the government of its responsibility to ensure proper regulation and humane living conditions,” he said.

NAPA has called for an independent inquiry into the matter, including:

Verification of the actual number of individuals residing in the reported location जांच (investigation) into the issuance of Aadhaar cards in such cases Immediate assessment of living conditions and provision of basic facilities Accountability of local administrative officials, if any negligence is found

Chahal further stressed that Punjab cannot afford to ignore such issues at a time when the state is already grappling with economic and social challenges. “This is not just about Bathinda. It reflects a broader governance question how effectively are we managing migration, urban planning, and public welfare?” he remarked.

In conclusion, NAPA urged the Punjab government to act swiftly and responsibly. “The truth must come out. If the claims are exaggerated, clarify them. If they are true, fix the system. Either way, silence is not an option,” Chahal asserted.
