High-profile Vancouver police officer charged in alleged $3-million fraud involving 19 victims. Vancouver police say a high-profile officer arrested Thursday allegedly defrauded 19 victims of about $3 million.Kal Dosanjh, a 26-year veteran of the Vancouver Police Department and CEO of the KidsPlay Youth Foundation, faces four counts of fraud over $5,000, four counts of theft over $5,000, and one count of breach of trust. The alleged offences date back to 2017.
At a Friday news conference, Vancouver police Chief Steve Rai said Dosanjh has been suspended and that he has recommended to the Vancouver Police Board that the suspension be served without pay.“These allegations are deeply troubling not only because of their seriousness, but because they have the potential to undermine the trust that our members work very hard, very hard to build and maintain with the public,” Rai said. “This officer had a profile in the community and internally, and officers are angry and disappointed.”Rai said the investigation began in December 2023 after multiple alleged victims came forward. Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet spoken to police.
According to court documents and police, some charges relate to alleged fraud and theft from investors in property development projects, including ventures identified as Azura, Queen’s Park and Sahara. Other charges allege fraud and theft from the KidsPlay Youth Foundation, the charity Dosanjh founded in 2015. Co-accused Sarabjit Singh Gill is listed on charges tied to the development projects. The alleged conduct spans 2017 to 2025.
Dosanjh, 50, of Surrey, was arrested Thursday. Police searched his residence and related locations. He last worked in a traffic/outreach role. Crown counsel approved the charges Thursday. Dosanjh has been described in past coverage as a youth advocate and anti-gang mentor through KidsPlay.
