Punjab has long been known for its hospitality and openness. However, in recent years, the unchecked influx of unverified migrant workers from other states has created serious concerns about law and order, public safety, and the well-being of residents. The situation demands immediate attention from the state government and law enforcement authorities.
One of the most pressing problems is the arrival of large numbers of people without proper verification or documentation. Many are living or working without verified Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, or police records. Some of these documents are reportedly issued through private agents rather than official channels. This lack of verification allows individuals involved in crimes to disappear easily, making it difficult for police to track or identify them later.
Several incidents have been reported in which unverified individuals have attacked or threatened residents. These attacks have led to fear and resentment among the local population. Many citizens believe that the absence of background checks has enabled anti-social elements to enter Punjab and create disturbances without accountability.
Another serious issue is the encroachment on both government and private land. In many towns and villages, unverified settlers have built unauthorised huts, shops, and shelters. These illegal occupations not only cause disputes but also disrupt urban planning and local development projects.
Residents claim that no responsible government department is taking charge of verifying the identity of these migrants. Without such a system, when crimes occur, the culprits can flee and vanish, leaving law enforcement helpless. Police officials themselves admit that without verified records or addresses, investigation and prosecution become nearly impossible.
Many locals complain that groups of unverified migrants roam the streets during the day, creating discomfort for women and families. There are reports of individuals consuming liquor openly on street corners, passing inappropriate comments at women, and disturbing public peace. Such behaviour contributes to a growing sense of insecurity among citizens.
Residents and small traders also point to another growing problem: unregulated small businesses being run by unverified individuals who often do not pay taxes or obtain licenses. These activities, apart from violating trade laws, have created unfair competition for local vendors who follow the rules.
Altogether, these developments are turning into a serious social challenge for Punjab. Locals feel that the unregulated influx of unverified individuals is altering the social balance, overburdening civic facilities, and weakening law enforcement efforts. The issue is not migration itself, but the absence of a transparent and accountable system to manage it.
On behalf of concerned citizens and social organisations, we strongly urge the Punjab government to take immediate steps to address the situation.
Statement:
“The Government of Punjab must implement a strict verification and registration system for all migrant workers and residents entering or living in the state. Every individual must be properly identified before employment or settlement. Law enforcement must be empowered to act against illegal encroachments, unverified identification, and public misconduct. Ensuring the safety, dignity, and rights of local citizens while maintaining law and order should be the government’s top priority.”
Such actions will not only protect local communities but also ensure that genuine workers and migrants—who contribute honestly to Punjab’s economy—can live and work peacefully within a system of accountability and fairness.
