A Dangerous Silence: The Murder of Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta and the Politics of Intimidation

Today, Punjab mourns the broad daylight murder of Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta — a chilling reminder of how law and order in the state has completely collapsed under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. But even as people grieve, one cannot ignore a video that has resurfaced — one that speaks volumes about the mindset guiding those in power. In that video, AAP’s Punjab in-charge, Manish Sisodia, is seen boasting before his cadre: “2027 ka chunaav jitvaane ke liye, saam, daam, dand, bhed, sach, jhooth, ladaai, jhagda — jo karna padega karenge!” The words reek not of politics, but of a dangerous doctrine — win at any cost, by any means.

What makes it even more shocking is that the Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, was right there, listening, smiling, and approving. Not a single word of objection. Not a moment of discomfort. Just a nod of endorsement for a statement that practically justifies deceit, manipulation, and violence for electoral gain. When such language is normalized at the highest political levels, should we be surprised that political rivals, critics, and activists are increasingly unsafe?

Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta’s brutal killing is not just a murder — it is a message. A message that in the Punjab of today, dissent can cost you your life, and those who dare to question the ruling regime might find themselves silenced forever. The people of Punjab must now ask: how can we expect justice for Sukhwinder’s murder when those responsible for maintaining justice are the same who glorify political warfare?

The Aam Aadmi Party came to power promising transparency, honesty, and change. But what Punjab has received instead is fear, suppression, and chaos. When a government starts believing that power is more important than principles, the line between governance and gangsterism disappears. And sadly, in the Punjab of 2025, that line already seems to have vanished.
