MP Preet Kaur Gill Welcomes UK Government’s Farming Roadmap 2050

London (Sandeep Singh Chahal)Preet Kaur Gill has highlighted the importance of the UK Government’s newly published Farming Roadmap 2050, describing it as a long-term strategy designed to provide farmers with greater certainty while strengthening the future of British agriculture.

She said farmers play a vital role in putting food on people’s tables, supporting rural communities and protecting the countryside. The roadmap aims to give the agricultural sector a clear long-term direction, enabling farmers to invest with confidence and build resilient businesses for decades to come.

Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, the Farming Roadmap 2050 recognises that every farm has unique challenges and opportunities. It provides a flexible framework that allows farmers to make decisions best suited to their individual businesses as markets, technology and climate conditions continue to evolve.

The strategy is built around three key priorities. The first focuses on supporting profitable farm businesses by helping farmers improve productivity, adopt modern technology, develop new skills, access wider markets and secure fairer returns across supply chains. The Government also plans to work closely with industry to strengthen sectors such as horticulture and poultry, reduce trade barriers and expand export opportunities.

The second priority centres on protecting the environment while maintaining food production. The roadmap supports healthier soils, cleaner waterways and nature recovery alongside sustainable farming. Environmental schemes will become more targeted, ensuring long-term support is directed towards projects that deliver meaningful environmental benefits without compromising food security.

The third priority aims to build resilience for the future by helping farmers adapt to climate change, extreme weather events, animal diseases and changing market conditions. Planned measures include improving water management, strengthening biosecurity, encouraging innovation to reduce reliance on expensive inputs such as fertilisers, and simplifying access to government support through a new single digital farming account.

According to the Government, the roadmap has been developed after extensive consultation with farmers and stakeholders across the agricultural sector. It reflects widespread calls for a clearer long-term vision, greater policy stability and practical support that enables farms to remain productive, profitable and environmentally sustainable.

The Government has also published its response to the independent Farming Profitability Review, with many of the review’s recommendations incorporated into the new strategy.

Preet Kaur Gill said the roadmap is intended to give British farmers the confidence to invest, innovate and plan for the future, ensuring the UK continues to benefit from a strong and resilient farming sector that produces high-quality food, supports rural employment and protects the natural environment for future generations
