Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi Honoured by Punjab Government for Efforts for Punjabis Worldwide

CHANDIGARH: British Sikh Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has been formally recognised by the Punjab Government for his efforts and advocacy on issues concerning Punjabis across the world, describing the recognition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha as a “huge honour.”

Dhesi shared that he was officially acknowledged by the Speaker and Chief Minister of Punjab during speeches in the Vidhan Sabha in Chandigarh. He expressed gratitude to the Speaker and Punjab ministers for presenting him with a memento in recognition of his work and efforts for Punjabis globally.

The recognition assumes particular significance because Dhesi has emerged as one of the prominent British Sikh voices in the UK Parliament, regularly raising issues concerning the Punjabi and Sikh diaspora, including immigration, international connectivity, the welfare of overseas Punjabis and stronger links between Punjab and its global community.

Dhesi’s message also underlines the growing importance of the Punjabi diaspora in Punjab’s social, economic and political landscape. Millions of Punjabis live outside India, particularly in the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia and Europe, maintaining strong family, cultural and economic links with Punjab.

For Punjab, the overseas community remains an important source of remittances, investment, professional expertise and international connections. At the same time, the diaspora frequently raises concerns regarding property disputes, immigration difficulties, safety, fraud, family issues and access to justice in Punjab. Dhesi has previously called for stronger institutional mechanisms to address problems faced by NRIs and for Punjab to strengthen its engagement with its global population.

The recognition by the Punjab Assembly sends a message that the contribution of Punjabis living abroad cannot be separated from Punjab’s development story. It also highlights the potential for elected representatives in foreign legislatures to serve as bridges between Punjab and the wider Punjabi community.

Dhesi’s political journey has made him a significant figure within the British Sikh community. He has represented Slough in the UK Parliament and has repeatedly used his parliamentary platform to raise issues affecting his constituents and the wider Sikh and Punjabi community.

The honour also comes at a time when Punjab faces major challenges involving migration, employment, agriculture, economic growth and the continuing departure of young people abroad. Against this backdrop, stronger engagement with the Punjabi diaspora could become an important component of Punjab’s future development strategy.

The Punjab Government’s recognition of Dhesi therefore goes beyond an individual memento. It represents an acknowledgement of the contribution and influence of Punjabis who have built successful lives abroad while continuing to maintain emotional, cultural and economic connections with their ancestral homeland.

Dhesi, while expressing his gratitude, said he was honoured to be recognised for his efforts for Punjabis globally. His statement reflects a broader message: Punjab’s relationship with its diaspora is not merely about remittances or migration—it is about maintaining a global Punjabi identity and creating meaningful partnerships between Punjab and the millions of Punjabis who live beyond its borders.

The recognition in the Vidhan Sabha could also encourage Punjab to develop a more comprehensive and institutionalised diaspora policy, ensuring that overseas Punjabis have a stronger voice in matters concerning their homeland and receive effective assistance when they face difficulties.

For a state whose people have established communities across virtually every major continent, the connection between Punjab and its diaspora remains one of its greatest global assets. The challenge before the government now is to transform that emotional connection into sustained cooperation, investment, protection and development.
