Punjab Cannot Ignore Images of Its People Being Treated This Way-By Satnam Singh Chahal

CHANDIGARH: Images showing a man in white clothing lying on a road while several uniformed personnel stand around him have raised serious questions about the treatment of citizens, the use of force and the responsibility of the authorities to protect people’s dignity and fundamental rights.

The circumstances surrounding the incident, including when and where it occurred, have not yet been independently verified. Nevertheless, the image raises an important public question: how should a government respond when citizens are seen being handled in a manner that appears degrading or potentially dangerous?

Punjab is a democratic state, and every citizen deserves dignity, equal protection under the law and the right to raise grievances peacefully. Whether a person is a farmer, worker, student, employee, political activist or member of any other section of society, their rights cannot depend on their political affiliation or their willingness to agree with those in power.

Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership, the Aam Aadmi Party government must answer legitimate questions about its handling of public protests, the conduct of the police and the protection of citizens’ rights. The government cannot expect public confidence to remain unquestioned when disturbing images circulate and the circumstances behind them demand clarification.

The issue is bigger than one photograph. It concerns the relationship between the state and its people. The police have a difficult responsibility to maintain public order, but that responsibility must be exercised lawfully, proportionately and with respect for human dignity. If excessive force was used, the matter warrants an impartial investigation and appropriate action against anyone found responsible. If the image does not tell the complete story, the authorities should release verified facts and explain what happened.

The Punjab government should establish the identity of the department and personnel involved, clarify the circumstances of the incident, disclose whether any official inquiry has been initiated and ensure that the person shown receives any necessary medical assistance. The official version should be made public without prejudicing any investigation.

For a government elected on promises of change, transparency and accountable administration, public trust must be earned through conduct, not slogans. Citizens have every right to question the government, demand explanations and seek justice through democratic and legal means.

Punjab must not become a place where ordinary people fear humiliation when they exercise their lawful rights. Nor should any incident be exploited to spread unverified claims or deepen social divisions. The appropriate response is evidence, accountability and justice.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the AAP government owe the people of Punjab clear answers wherever credible questions arise about the treatment of citizens by state authorities. The opposition, civil society, human-rights organisations and the media also have a responsibility to seek the truth and ensure that the rights of affected individuals are not forgotten.

Punjab must remember every credible allegation of injustice not to encourage hatred, but to demand accountability. No government is above public scrutiny, no uniform places anyone above the law, and no citizen should be denied dignity.

Ultimately, the people of Punjab will assess the government’s record through its actions, its transparency and its response to legitimate public concerns. In a democracy, that judgment belongs to the voters.
