Milpitas, California / Jalandhar, Punjab – The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has expressed serious concern over reports of the Maharashtra Government’s proposed intervention in matters concerning Sikh religious institutions. NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal stated that any action perceived as government interference in the management and administration of Sikh religious places has the potential to create anxiety and mistrust among Sikhs across India and the global diaspora. In a statement issued today, Chahal said that the Sikh community has historically managed its religious institutions through established religious and community mechanisms, and any attempt to alter that framework without broad consultation could undermine the autonomy and sanctity of Sikh religious institutions.
“The Sikh community attaches immense importance to the independent management of its religious places. Any legislative or administrative action that appears to dilute that independence will naturally raise concerns among Sikhs around the world,” said Satnam Singh Chahal. Chahal noted that Sikh institutions are not merely places of worship but are also centers of community service, education, and cultural preservation. He emphasized that governments should exercise caution and engage in meaningful dialogue with Sikh representatives before introducing measures that could affect the functioning of these institutions. “Religious freedom and institutional autonomy are fundamental principles in any democratic society.
Decisions affecting religious communities should be taken only after extensive consultation and consensus-building with the stakeholders concerned,” Chahal added. NAPA also urged political leaders across party lines to rise above partisan considerations and safeguard the constitutional rights of all religious communities. The organization called upon elected representatives from Punjab and other states to carefully examine the implications of the proposed measures and ensure that the concerns of the Sikh community are adequately addressed. “The issue transcends politics. It concerns the preservation of religious rights and the confidence of a community that has made immense contributions to India’s nation-building and to societies across the world,” Chahal said. The association appealed to the Maharashtra Government to initiate open discussions with Sikh religious bodies, legal experts, and community organizations before implementing any policy that may affect Sikh religious institutions.
NAPA further urged the Government of India to reaffirm its commitment to protecting the autonomy of minority religious institutions and to ensure that constitutional guarantees relating to freedom of religion are fully respected. “Constructive dialogue, transparency, and respect for religious institutions are the best ways to prevent misunderstandings and maintain communal harmony. The Sikh community deserves to be heard before any decision affecting its religious affairs is taken,” Chahal concluded. The North American Punjabi Association will continue to monitor developments on this issue and stands in support of efforts aimed at protecting religious freedom, community rights, and democratic values.
