Milpitas, California: The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has urged the Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to issue clear and authoritative Panthic guidance regarding the recital and singing of “Vande Mataram” by Sikhs at government, educational and other official functions.
NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal said the issue deserves serious examination from the perspective of Sikh religious principles and the Sikh Rehat Maryada rather than being turned into a political confrontation. Several Sikh organisations have recently approached Sri Akal Takht Sahib on the same question, seeking uniform guidance for the Sikh community.
“There should be no confusion between patriotism and religious belief. Sikhs have always demonstrated their love for the country through sacrifice, military service, humanitarian work and service to society. But at the same time, Sikhs have a distinct religious philosophy and the community has the right to seek clarity whenever a practice may raise questions concerning its religious principles,” Chahal said.
NAPA has therefore requested Sri Akal Takht Sahib to examine whether the complete composition of “Vande Mataram” is compatible with fundamental Sikh beliefs, particularly the Sikh doctrine of worshipping the One, Formless Akal Purakh.
The organisation has also sought clarification on whether Sikh students, teachers, government employees, members of the armed forces or other Sikh citizens can be compelled to sing or recite the composition if they believe participation conflicts with their religious convictions.
Chahal said the matter should not be approached with anger or political slogans. “This is not a question of being patriotic or unpatriotic. It is a question of religious clarity. If there is no conflict with Sikh principles, the Panth should be told so clearly. If there is a conflict, the Sikh community should likewise receive clear guidance from Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Silence or ambiguity can only create further confusion.”
NAPA believes that Sri Akal Takht Sahib, as the highest temporal seat of the Sikh Panth, is the appropriate institution to examine the matter and provide a clear, consistent and universally applicable Panthic position.
“We appeal to all political parties, Sikh organisations and community leaders to avoid politicising this sensitive issue. Let the matter be decided through Gurbani, Gurmat principles, Sikh Rehat Maryada and reasoned Panthic deliberation. Once Sri Akal Takht Sahib gives its considered guidance, every Sikh should respect that guidance,” Chahal added.
NAPA further appealed for mutual respect between national identity and religious freedom, emphasizing that patriotism should never be measured solely by participation in a particular ceremony, nor should legitimate questions about religious practice be automatically labelled as opposition to the nation.
