UK PM Hosts Vaisakhi Event at Downing Street, Engages Sikh Students-Preet Kaur Gill MP

London, UK: Preet Kaur Gill, Member of Parliament for Birmingham Edgbaston, attended a special Vaisakhi celebration hosted at 10 Downing Street, where Sikh students and community representatives gathered to mark one of the most significant festivals in Sikhism.

Sharing her experience, Gill described the occasion as a “wonderful” opportunity to connect with students from the University of Birmingham Sikh Society, who were invited to participate in the prestigious event. The gathering highlighted the cultural and religious importance of Vaisakhi while also providing a platform for dialogue between young Sikh voices and the UK leadership.

The event, hosted by Keir Starmer, underscored the government’s recognition of diversity and inclusion, as students were given the chance to discuss the significance of Vaisakhi and its values of equality, service, and community spirit. Gill thanked the Prime Minister for engaging directly with the students and acknowledging the contribution of the Sikh community across the UK.

Commending the students, Gill praised them as “excellent representatives” of both their university and the wider Sikh community. The presence of students from areas such as Birmingham, Edgbaston, Quinton, Harborne, North Edgbaston, and Bartley Green further reflected the strong grassroots connection between local communities and national institutions.

The Vaisakhi celebration at Downing Street serves as a reminder of the growing visibility and influence of the Sikh community in British public life, while reinforcing the importance of cultural recognition at the highest levels of government.
