London-On the occasion of Commonwealth Day, British Member of Parliament Preet Kaur Gill announced that she is proud to chair the newly launched Labour Friends of the Commonwealth, a parliamentary group aimed at strengthening ties among member nations of the Commonwealth of Nations. The initiative was formally introduced at an event held in the UK Parliament, attended by the Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, highlighting the growing importance of cooperation among Commonwealth countries.
Speaking on the occasion, Gill emphasized that the Commonwealth should not be seen merely as a legacy of historical connections but as a dynamic and modern partnership among nations. She noted that countries within the Commonwealth share common challenges such as climate change, economic development, migration, and global security, and must work collectively to address these issues while creating new opportunities for trade, education, and cultural exchange.
Gill also pointed out that the formation of Labour Friends of the Commonwealth will help strengthen dialogue between policymakers, diplomats, and communities across the Commonwealth. According to her, the platform will encourage collaboration on key policy areas and promote the values of democracy, equality, and mutual respect that underpin the Commonwealth partnership.
The launch event drew attention to the importance of revitalizing relationships among the 56 member countries of the Commonwealth, which together represent more than 2.5 billion people worldwide. Leaders and participants highlighted that stronger engagement between governments and parliamentary groups can play a vital role in promoting development, sustainability, and cooperation across continents.
Preet Kaur Gill, who has been a prominent voice on international cooperation and diaspora engagement, said she looks forward to working closely with Commonwealth leaders and communities to ensure that the organization continues to evolve as a platform for meaningful global collaboration in the 21st century.
