Chandigarh: The government led by Bhagwant Mann in Punjab is facing strong criticism after police used force against teachers protesting for their rights. Several teacher unions alleged that while the ruling party displays confidence and dominance inside the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, it is responding with harsh measures against those raising legitimate concerns outside the Assembly.
Teachers had gathered to demand regularisation of services, improved working conditions, and fulfilment of long-pending promises made by the government. However, the protest reportedly turned tense when police resorted to a lathi charge and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Many protesters claimed they were peacefully raising their demands when the situation escalated.
Opposition leaders have also criticised the government led by the Aam Aadmi Party, accusing it of ignoring democratic dialogue. They allege that the government is unwilling to listen either to the opposition raising public issues inside the Assembly or to teachers demanding justice on the streets.
Teacher organisations say the incident reflects a growing disconnect between the government and the education community. They argue that instead of engaging in constructive dialogue, the administration is resorting to force to silence voices seeking fair treatment.
The protests have triggered widespread debate across Punjab, with many civil society groups and education advocates expressing solidarity with the teachers and calling for a peaceful resolution. Social media campaigns supporting the educators have also begun to trend under the hashtag #StandWithTeachers, demanding that the government listen to their grievances and address their concerns without intimidation.
