Indian Peacekeepers in DRC Honored with UN Medal for Exceptional Service

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO — Over 600 Indian soldiers deployed in one of the world’s most volatile conflict zones have been officially decorated for their courage and operational excellence. In a high-profile military ceremony held on July 3 at the Sake Permanent Operating Base, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) presented the prestigious United Nations Medal to 651 personnel of the Indian Army contingent.

The event drew a distinguished gathering of international observers, including senior MONUSCO officials, Force Headquarters representatives, and regional military commanders who gathered to honor the peacekeepers’ contributions to regional stability.

Operating under a demanding UN mandate, the Indian deployment has been instrumental in navigating the complex security landscape of the DRC. The contingent’s daily operations focus heavily on maintaining a protective umbrella over local civilian populations, neutralizing active security threats, and securing vital corridors to ensure that international humanitarian aid reaches vulnerable, conflict-weary communities.

According to an official statement released by the Indian Army on July 4, this mass decoration underscores New Delhi’s enduring legacy as a bedrock contributor to global blue-helmet operations. Military officials emphasized that the recognition highlights India’s broader geopolitical commitment to international peace, security, and the active defense of human rights in highly unstable territories.

The ceremony concluded with a formal parade, during which the decorated soldiers renewed their oaths to serve under the United Nations flag, pledging to maintain the highest standards of military professionalism and integrity throughout the remainder of their deployment.
