Sikh Organisations to Gather at Akal Takht on June 6; Concerns Over Possible Ideological Clashes

Amritsar: Various Sikh organizations are scheduled to hold programmes at the sacred Akal Takht Sahib on June 6, 2025, to commemorate the anniversary of Operation Bluestar. While the day holds deep emotional and historical significance for the Sikh community, the coming together of multiple groups with differing ideologies has raised concerns over possible infighting or confrontations.

Sources indicate that several factions, including Panthic bodies, socio-religious outfits, and political organizations, have announced parallel events at the Akal Takht Sahib. While all groups claim to uphold Sikh values and the sanctity of the occasion, their ideological divisions—ranging from demands for justice, calls for sovereignty, to criticism of current Sikh leadership—could potentially lead to friction on the ground.

Security has been tightened in and around the Golden Temple complex, with SGPC officials and the Shiromani Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar appealing for peace and unity. Police and intelligence agencies are on alert to ensure the event passes without incident. Observers fear that even a small provocation could escalate tensions among emotionally charged groups. All eyes will be on how the leadership of these organisations manages to balance their divergent views while maintaining the sanctity and decorum of the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs.

Shri Akal Takht Sahib on June 6, 2025, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Punjab Police have stepped up coordination to avert any possible clashes due to ideological differences among participating groups. The SGPC has issued strict guidelines to maintain discipline and ensure the sanctity of the sacred site is not compromised. Meetings have been held with representatives of various factions, urging them to avoid inflammatory speeches and to conduct their programmes peacefully.

Punjab Police, in coordination with intelligence agencies, has increased surveillance in Amritsar and deployed additional security personnel in and around the Golden Temple complex. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and plainclothes officers will be present to monitor crowd behaviour. Entry routes will be closely monitored, and drone surveillance may also be employed on the day of the event. The Akal Takht Jathedar has appealed for unity and asked all groups to rise above divisions to honour the solemnity of the occasion. Authorities remain hopeful that these combined efforts will ensure a peaceful and respectful observance.
