SACRAMENTO, CA -The California State Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising Diwali and expressing its “deepest respect” for Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora in California and around the world. House Resolution 137 recognises Diwali, which will be celebrated this year on November 8, and encourages Californians to participate in the festival’s celebrations. Assemblymembers Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra introduced the measure on August 13.
The resolution was adopted following consideration by the Assembly Committee on Rules and drew support from a broad group of co-authors from across the Assembly.It describes Diwali, also known as Deepavali, as a festival of major significance to Indian American and South Asian American communities. Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains celebrate the festival in the United States and around the world. According to the resolution, the word Diwali means “a row of lamps.” It describes the festival as one of the world’s oldest holidays, bringing together families, friends and communities in celebration.
The resolution highlights generosity, unity, joy, appreciation and reflection as central themes of Diwali. It notes that the traditional lamps symbolize “the defeat of darkness and the victory of light” and are part of celebrations that bring families together and strengthen community ties.Different Diwali traditions, the resolution says, reflect the triumph of good over evil and emphasize overcoming struggles, embracing positivity and humility, and maintaining kindness in the face of personal challenges.
The Assembly also noted that Diwali will be celebrated this year by Indian American and South Asian American communities across the diaspora. For many, the festival also marks the beginning of a new year.“For those who celebrate, Diwali is a time to commit to knowledge, growth, and happiness,” the resolution states.The measure also describes Diwali as an opportunity for reflection and highlights the values of wisdom, kindness and personal transformation associated with the festival.
